The National Farmers Federation has applauded the appointment of Ms Sue McCluskey as the first Special Representative for Australian Agriculture.
The objective of the newly-created role is to boost Australia's presence and influence in the agricultural institutions that shape farmers' access to export markets.
"The establishment of Special Representative for Australian Agriculture position was strongly supported by the NFF," President Fiona Simson said.
"Australian farmers export more than 70% of what we produce, we depend on a rules based, free and fair global trading system. The value of having a dedicated position to further this imperative, through the Special Representative, can't be overstated.
"We delighted at the appointment of Ms McClusky.
"Ms McClusky has an in-depth knowledge of agriculture and regional Australia and comprehensive experience in risk-based systems and regulatory frameworks."
The NFF is the secretariat of the Cairns Group Farm Leaders, a coalition formed in 1989, dedicated to achieving an equitable and enforceable rules-based trading system in agriculture. Ms Simson is the Secretary of the Group.
"In her new role, Ms McCluskey will no doubt complement the work the NFF and our peers in the Cairns Group Farm Leaders do in highlighting the many benefits of the free and fair trade of agricultural goods across the globe.
"During her career, Ms McCluskey has proven to be a strong and persuasive voice for agriculture and I know, Sue will serve Australian farmers well in representing them on the world stage."

The NFF's goal for agriculture to be a $100 billion industry by 2030 is underpinned by the expansion of market access and the reduction of tariff and the non-tariff barriers imposed on Australia's agricultural exports.
