National Volunteer Week is a time to celebrate the people who give their time, skills and care to support others.
This year's theme, Your Year to Volunteer, provides an opportunity to honour the contributions of volunteers and inspire people to share the joy and purpose that volunteering brings.
Across the Shire, volunteers support Council services, help at events, care for the environment, provide transport, support families and older residents, and strengthen sporting and community clubs.
Mayor Cr Naomi Joiner said National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to acknowledge both the scale and the heart of volunteering in Nillumbik.
"With over 6,000 volunteers contributing in different ways across our community, volunteering continues to be one of our greatest strengths," Cr Joiner said.
"This week is about saying thank you and encouraging people to consider whether 2026 could be their year to volunteer."
Throughout National Volunteer Week, Council's social media channels will showcase a few of the many stories of volunteering across Nillumbik, highlighting how volunteers make a difference all year round.
As a visible tribute, Council will light up the Eltham Gateway public art sculpture Gunga winhanga warr bundha ba winhanga warr djurring (Take what you need and not what you greed) by Maureen Faye-Chauhan in red, acknowledging the dedication of local volunteers who enrich our communities each and every day.
Council will also host a volunteer recognition evening to celebrate the dedication, passion and impact of volunteers and to thank them for their ongoing contribution to community life.
