Fugitive's Escape Plan Fails

A man who allegedly stole a vehicle from a driveway before crashing it and attempting to run from Police will now face court.

Police received a call at about 10.20pm last night after an Ōrewa couple reported they were watching someone steal their vehicle from their Centreway Road home.

Senior Sergeant Brett Henshaw, Waitematā North Area Manager, says the victims decided to follow the vehicle.

"A short time later they located their car crashed at the intersection of Old North Road and Hibiscus Coast Highway and witnessed the offender running off.

"The alleged offender has run through several properties, which Police also received calls in relation to.

"The Police Eagle helicopter and the Delta unit attended and cordons were put in place before the Eagle crew located the suspect in a driveway."

Senior Sergeant Henshaw says the man was quickly taken into custody.

"I'd like to acknowledge all the staff involved for their work in responding to this incident."

A 36-year-old man will appear in North Shore District Court today facing charges including being unlawfully in a building, unlawfully in an enclosed yard, burglary, driving while disqualified and careless driving.
