Nature trail extended in Sydneys South West

A popular walking and bike track in Sydney's south west continues to expand thanks to $268,000 in funding as part of the NSW Government's Metropolitan Greenspace Program.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes today announced the opening of the latest 1.5km addition to the Macarthur Regional Recreational Trail in the Australian Botanic Garden at Mount Annan.

"Active transport links involving cycleways and pedestrian paths are so important for our growing city and this investment provides a better connection for locals and visitors to enjoy," Mr Stokes said.

"The 416-hectare Australian Botanic Garden is looking spectacular as we head into Autumn and this new track means more people can access and enjoy this scenic landscape.

"The Metropolitan Greenspace Program has been running since 1990 and has provided more than $45 million to help councils deliver more than 635 projects."

Member for Camden Peter Sidgreaves said the new section is the second installment of what will eventually be the 14-kilometre Macarthur Regional Recreational Trail.

"It's wonderful to see construction of the path finally complete and we're very excited to see this much-loved community asset grow," Mr Sidgreaves said.

"The trail will ultimately link Campbelltown railway station through the University of Western Sydney to the Botanic Garden.

The latest round of matched funding is now open for councils to help green their communities and create and improve new public open spaces.
