When excellence is measured across the entire Defence community, it is rare for one ship to stand out twice, but this year, HMAS Brisbane boasted two finalists in the 2025 Women in Defence Awards.
Petty Officer Brionee Harvey won the ICT and Cyber category, for her work establishing the communication centre on the new Evolved Cape-class patrol boat (ECCPB) ADV Cape Naturaliste, while Lieutenant Commander Shafiqah Shariff Ali was shortlisted in the Operations category for her role as the Strike Officer on board, for the planning and execution of Australia's first Tomahawk land attack missile firing.
Petty Officer Harvey said the recognition highlighted the contributions of women across Defence.
"I'm genuinely surprised and honoured to win this award. I just felt like I was doing my job and doing my best to help solve the problem. I believe anyone else in my position would have done the same thing," she said.
Petty Officer Harvey was recognised for her technical expertise and problem solving, which she was able to consolidate and share with others, benefitting the entire ECCPB fleet and strengthening Navy's ability to deliver secure and reliable communications at sea.
Lieutenant Commander Shariff Ali's nomination reflected her leadership at the heart of HMAS Brisbane's warfighting operational capability. Her commitment and technical expertise have been instrumental in advancing cutting-edge capability and enhancing the lethality of the Navy's surface fleet.
Commanding Officer HMAS Brisbane Commander David Mason said the recognition for both personnel was well deserved and a proud moment for all who serve alongside them.
"Having previously worked with both members, I know firsthand the technical expertise and professionalism they bring to every role," Commander Mason said.
Neither member was able to attend the gala dinner on October 15 in Canberra, as HMAS Brisbane is currently on a regional presence deployment, a key part of Australia's contribution to maintaining collective security in the Indo-Pacific.
The Women in Defence Awards celebrate talented, determined, successful women who have made a positive impact in the Defence business arena and the achievements of women across Defence, from members in uniform and the Australian Public Service, to industry leaders.
Both nominees reflect the talent and dedication within HMAS Brisbane and the important role women play in advancing Defence capability.
