The Australian Government extends its thanks to the inaugural Coordinator-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, Brendan Moon AM, who has announced his retirement from the agency following a distinguished career in emergency management.
Mr Moon was appointed as Coordinator-General in September 2022 following the merging of Emergency Management Australia and the National Recovery and Resilience Agency.
Since commencing as Coordinator-General, Mr Moon has led the agency through several disasters, supporting both response and recovery. Prior to this role, he spent 10 years with the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) including as CEO.
In my time as Minister, I have worked with Mr Moon to oversee the Albanese Labor Government's strategic shift towards disaster risk reduction and resilience to better protect communities from more complex, frequent and catastrophic disasters.
I thank him for his advice as we have invested in a range of national preparedness activities, including the National Aerial Firefighting Fleet, the National Emergency Management Stockpile and our Hazards Insurance Partnership with industry.
I would also like to thank Mr Moon for his leadership over the last Higher Risk Weather Season and wish him well for what comes next.
Mr Moon will leave NEMA on 9 April 2026. Pat Hetherington will be appointed as interim Coordinator-General while a merit-based recruitment process is undertaken.
