New Aboriginal Trainee Rangers wanted on South Coast

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is recruiting Aboriginal trainee rangers to join the Narooma and Merimbula teams to care for spectacular Country on the Far South Coast.

NPWS Area Manager Paula Tomkins said the 3 positions are a pathway for young people to become full-time, ongoing NPWS rangers.

"A large part of the role will be supporting the Biamanga and Gulaga Joint Management Board's initiatives for Country," said Ms Tomkins.

"So we are looking for people who have a connection to these communities and are willing to help us embed Aboriginal cultural knowledge across or work.

"The trainees will also join our rangers and field teams to learn the practical, hands-on aspects of managing parks.

"It's never a dull moment working as a trainee ranger and we are looking for young Aboriginal people who can turn their hand to all sorts of jobs.

"One day they might be repairing walking tracks or keeping an eye on a hauled-out seal and the next they will be helping with a hazard reduction or cultural burn," Ms Tomkins said.

Two of the positions will be based in Narooma and the third in Merimbula.

Mr Bunja Smith, Chair of the Biamanga Board of Management will be a mentor to the successful candidates.

"The new trainee rangers will be supporting not only the Biamanga Board, but also the Gulaga Board of Management in two culturally significant parks on the South Coast," Mr Smith said.

"The trainees will benefit from engaging with the Boards and learning from the wealth of their environmental and cultural knowledge.

"Likewise, we are looking forward to welcoming these trainees to Country and watching them learn and grow to be future custodians," Mr Smith said.

The Aboriginal trainee ranger roles require candidates to complete a bachelor level degree in a relevant environmental discipline during the traineeship.

Upon successful completion of the degree, trainees will be guaranteed an ongoing ranger role with NPWS.

Applications for the three Aboriginal trainee ranger positions are open until 7 September 2021.
