Australians are increasingly turning to social media and messaging applications to stay connected, conduct business and exchange ideas and information. However these applications also come with risks.

The ACSC has today released updated guidance to help all Australians better understand how social media and messaging apps can pose a risk to the security and privacy of individuals and organisations. These risks include the exploitation of personal information, the collection of users' data, and identify theft, fraud, reputational damage.

This updated guidance - Security Tips for Social Media and Messaging Apps - provides an overview of these risks as well as cyber security recommendations for businesses and individuals. The guidance also includes links to other helpful ACSC resources to help Australians avoid other common cyber security incidents and scams.

All Australians are urged to report cybercrime and cyber incidents to ReportCyber, or call the 24/7 cyber security hotline 1300 CYBER1 (1300 292 371).
