Advisory Board appointed for Queensland Academy of Sport

  • New eight-member Advisory Board established for Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS).
  • Advisory Board will work closely with QAS management to transition the Academy to a statutory body.
  • QAS will become a statutory body on 1 July 2025, 12 months earlier than the former Labor Government's plan.

The Crisafulli Government has appointed a new eight-member Advisory Board for the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) to steer its transition to a Statutory Body.

The members of the Board - who bring together business, legal, communications as well as Olympic and Paralympic experience - are:

  • Ella Sabljak
  • Mark James
  • Benjamin Ikin
  • Alex Baumann
  • Susan Rix AM
  • Annette Maidment

The new Advisory Board will work closely with the Crisafulli Government and QAS management to ensure the Academy's new structure delivers the agility and efficiency necessary to support Queensland's elite athletes to succeed.

The Advisory Board will hold its first meeting later this month.

The Crisafulli Government is delivering certainty to Queensland's elite athletes and the high-performance sector by transitioning the QAS to a Statutory Body, 12 months sooner than the former Labor Government's plan.

Minister for Sport and Minister for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tim Mander said the new Advisory Board had the right mix of skills, with strong Olympic, Paralympic and elite sport experience, as well as key business capabilities.

"The Crisafulli Government is committed to delivering the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games that Queenslanders deserve and making it our most successful Games ever," Minister Mander said.

"Transitioning the QAS to a statutory body gives the organisation greater independence and the ability to streamline its administration and operation to allow our athletes to thrive.

"Unlike the previous Labor Government, we are committed to making sure this transition occurs well and in a timely manner.

"The Advisory Board will work closely with QAS management and staff to meet the goal of more medals in more sports at the Olympic and Paralympic Games in LA2028, Brisbane 2032 and beyond.
