New Bird River pedestrian bridge now open

Jacquie Petrusma,Minister for Parks

The new Bird River pedestrian bridge is now complete and the Kelly Basin Walk has reopened at Macquarie Harbour Historic Site in the World Heritage Area, near Strahan.

The walk has been closed while construction of the new bridge was underway to ensure public safety, as the previous historic bridge was no longer safe for use.

The new pedestrian bridge was designed to blend in with the environment and importantly, upholds the history of the area with the use of railway-style trusses. The new bridge also provides excellent views of the historic bridge.

The Tasmanian Government is committed to maintaining the heritage values of the site and is currently considering options to stabilise the historic bridge.

We will continue to ensure that our special natural places are protected and presented in ways that protect the natural and cultural values they contain.
