New Children and Young People Commissioner Appointed

Tasmanian Government

Sonya Pringle-Jones has been appointed as the new Commissioner for Children and Young People.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Corrections and Rehabilitation, Guy Barnett, congratulated Ms Pringle-Jones on her appointment following a nation-leading recruitment process that placed young Tasmanians at the centre of the selection process.

"Ms Pringle-Jones has dedicated her career to championing children's rights, amplifying young people's voices and improving outcomes for vulnerable children across Tasmania," the Attorney-General said.

"Her extensive experience across residential care, child protection, trauma-informed therapeutic support and operational leadership, including as Tasmania's inaugural Child Advocate for children and young people in out-of-home care, will be invaluable in this important role.

"This appointment marks a significant milestone in the establishment of the new Commission for Children and Young People, which will play a vital role in protecting, promoting and advocating for the rights, wellbeing and interests of Tasmania's children and young people.

"I also extend my sincere gratitude to Ros Cornish for her invaluable service as Interim Commissioner and her contribution to protecting and promoting the rights and wellbeing of Tasmania's children and young people."

In accordance with the Commission for Children and Young People Act, recruitment for the position included both senior and youth-led selection panels.

"The new Commission delivers on key recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry, including a stronger focus on children's rights and participation, and ensuring young people have a genuine voice in decisions that affect them," the Attorney-General said.

"That commitment was brought to life through a recruitment process that gave young Tasmanians a direct role in selecting the inaugural Commissioner.

"I thank the young Tasmanians who participated for their thoughtful contribution and commitment to helping shape the future of the Commission."

Ms Pringle-Jones will commence in the role when the new Commission is formally established on 8 October 2026.
