New Commander for Operation Sovereign Borders

Department of Home Affairs

From today, the Australian Government's strong border protection measures under Operation Sovereign Borders will be led by Rear Admiral Justin Jones CSC, RAN, ensuring continuity of the successful border policies that have saved lives at sea since 2013 and ended maritime people smuggling to Australia.

Minister for Home Affairs Karen Andrews welcomed Rear Admiral Jones to the role, noting his more than 30 years of distinguished service in the Royal Australian Navy, most recently as Director General Operations at Headquarters Joint Operation Command.

"Since 2013, the Australian Government has worked methodically - and successfully - to end maritime people smuggling in our region. Under Operation Sovereign Borders, Australia has some of the strongest border protection arrangements in the world," Minister Andrews said.

"Anyone considering an illegal maritime journey to Australia should think again. Under this Government, you have zero chance of success."

Rear Admiral Jones has assumed responsibilities from Rear Admiral Mark Hill AM, CSC, RAN, who has served with distinction as both Commander Joint Agency Task Force Operation Sovereign Borders and Commander Maritime Border Command since December 2020.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank Rear Admiral Hill for his exemplary service to our nation, and wish him the best in all his future endeavours," Minister Andrews said.

The Australian Government is committed to protecting Australia's borders, combating people smuggling in our region, and preventing people from risking their lives at sea.

Operation Sovereign Borders is a military-led border security operation that was established in 2013 to deliver on this commitment. For more information visit the Operation Sovereign Borders website.
