New committee oversees Council's purchasing processes

Procurement and Appropriations Special Committee agenda
The Procurement and Appropriations Special Committee has been established to ensure Council's procurement processes are efficient.

A special committee has been created to ensure Logan City Council receives value for money when it purchases goods and services from external suppliers.

The Procurement and Appropriations Special Committee will provide support to Council staff, in line with relevant legislation.

It will meet quarterly and make recommendations to Council's City Governance Committee.

City Governance Chairperson, Councillor Lisa Bradley, said establishing the special committee was an important step in ensuring Council's procurement processes remained efficient.

"Logan City Council has always been committed to making its procurement as effective and beneficial as possible for both contractors and the wider Logan community," Cr Bradley said.

"This committee will provide the necessary checks and balances to ensure not only that ratepayer dollars are saved, but that the best and most appropriate services are provided to the City of Logan."

Council spends approximately $500 million on goods and services each year, with more than 90 large-sized contracts to be awarded in 2020/2021.

Division 8 Councillor Jacob Heremaia was elected chairperson of the special committee, which held its first meeting on September 8.

"At that meeting, we received an update on Council's plans to review its procurement processes as well as details on contracts that will be put out for tender this financial year," Cr Heremaia said.

"I was pleased to see that the organisation wants to make it easier for external suppliers to do business with Council by being more innovative, flexible and sustainable.

"A project is underway to overhaul Council's current practices to be less bureaucratic and inflexible.

"We know it is a privilege to have so many high-calibre companies seeking to work with Council on the projects that matter to our communities."

Councillors on the Procurement and Appropriations Special Committee include:

  • Councillor Jacob Heremaia (chairperson)
  • Councillor Lisa Bradley
  • Councillor Tim Frazer
  • Councillor Miriam Stemp
  • Councillor Natalie Willcocks
  • Councillor Scott Bannan.

The next meeting will be held on December 1.
