Vulnerable children and families in Ballina will have easier access to support with the opening of a new Community Service Centre (CSC) today. The new Ballina CSC delivers a modern, accessible space to provide essential services to local families at risk.
The Minns Labor Government has invested nearly $3 million in the project, bringing together 20 local staff from the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ), including 14 child protection caseworkers, in a purpose-built space designed to improve service delivery and strengthen outcomes for the region.
The Ballina CSC will now serve as a permanent hub for child protection and family support services across the region, supporting frontline staff, strengthening local partnerships and ensuring families can access help locally when they need it most.
The new centre's facilities include contemporary workspaces, community meeting rooms, and a purpose-built family room offering therapeutic spaces for children. This building will also provide a local operational capacity for the statewide Joint Child Protection Response Program, a specialised multi-agency response by DCJ, NSW Police and NSW Health for cases of criminal child abuse.
The 14 local child protection caseworkers have also benefited from the Minns Labor Government's landmark pay deal with the Public Service Association, struck in September last year. Under the new Award, child protection caseworkers have benefitted from significant salary increases, improved overtime provisions and the creation of 100 new roles for leading caseworkers.
Located at 191-199 River Street the new Ballina facility is the fourth new community service centre for the region, following the significant investment and rebuild of three sites in Lismore after the devastating floods of 2022.
Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Inclusion Kate Washington said:
"This investment ensures local families in Ballina and surrounding communities receive the support they need, close to home.
"The centre will provide a safe, modern and inviting environment where our caseworkers can support children and families when they need it most."
Minister for the North Coast Janelle Saffin said:
"The upgraded Ballina CSC reflects our commitment to regional communities and to strengthening frontline services.
"Our caseworkers carry out vital work, and this new space gives them the facilities they need to support local families with dignity, cultural understanding and care. It's a proud day for Ballina - and a major step forward for providing services in a way that is safe and respectful."
Secretary of the Department of Communities and Justice Michael Tidball said:
"Connection to community is essential. This new centre gives families and staff a safe, inclusive and welcoming place to work together."
