The cricket nets at Brighton Beach Oval are being replaced to increase safety and enjoyment at the practice facility. These works will bring the nets up to current Australian Standards and Cricket Victoria requirements.
Council will pull up stumps on the existing worn-out nets between 18 May and 29 May, weather permitting. Following demolition of the current nets, a new four-bay fully enclosed 36-metre synthetic wicket will be built on the existing site. These works will be complete by October 2020 ahead of the summer cricket season.
A safer structure
The Oval's foreshore location means that nets are particularly susceptible to environmental pressure and can develop holes. New reinforced nets will ensure that cricket balls remain within the structure and increase safety from high flying cricket balls.
The upgrade works will include installing protective matting around the batter to protect fencing and replacing the power bollard for the bowling machine. There will also be a secure access gate on each side of the enclosure.
