Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services, Mark Ryan and Commissioner Ian Stewart attended the launch of the Griffith University Social Analytics Laboratory in Mount Gravatt today, Queensland Police say.
Commissioner Stewart said the $1 million research facility would operate as a data sharing arrangement between Griffith University and the Queensland Police Service.
"Researchers will now be able to access de-identified individual level crime data occurring in Queensland between 2008 and 2017 from the QPS information database, QPRIME," Commissioner Stewart said.
"Being able to access this amount of data will enhance the work of Griffith University researchers and their development of evidence-based findings.
"The research conducted from it will inevitably improve our strategies for future policing, community safety and crime prevention in Queensland."
The custom-built laboratory combines high-performance computing facilities with industry standard security.
It allows sensitive administrative data to be stored and studied using advanced analytics to reveal patterns and insights from large complex government agency data.
An Australian-first, the Social Analytics Laboratory joins Griffith research with facilities at the Jill Dando Institute of Crime Science, University College London and the Institute for Canadian Urban Research Studies, Simon Fraser University, Canada.
Initial projects at Griffith University utilising the laboratory include researchers examining crime data to identify patterns in burglary and car crime to inform operational policing.
