New Energy Safety Roadmap To Keep Victorians Safe

VIC Premier

The Allan Labor Government is keeping Victorian energy workers and customers safe with strengthened safety standards as new and emerging technologies become part of everyday life.

Minister for Energy and Resources Lily D'Ambrosio today released the Energy Safety Roadmap, a comprehensive plan to strengthen safety standards, modernise regulation and prepare workers and consumers for new technologies as Victoria's energy system transforms.

Victoria is building for the future, bringing online new renewable energy - the cheapest form of new energy generation and making sure our homes and businesses are energy efficient and cheaper to power. It's important that our energy safety regulations keep pace with this transformation.

With more households and businesses adopting solar panels, batteries, electric vehicle chargers, e-bikes and e-scooters, new safety responsibilities must be managed proactively.

The Roadmap sets out actions to keep consumers safe like improving product standards and labelling which will provide clearer information so Victorians can make informed choices about the safety and quality of products.

It will also enhance recall processes to ensure that unsafe or defective products are quickly identified and removed from the market. It will also help educate consumers on safe installation and maintenance of solar, batteries, and electric vehicle chargers which is critical to preventing safety hazards.

The Roadmap also focuses on workforce readiness, ensuring energy workers receive the training and experience needed for future jobs. Licensing requirements for electrical workers, plumbers and gasfitters will also be reviewed to ensure they have the right skills and qualifications to work safely with new technologies.

The Government will also modernise the state's energy safety regulatory framework - reviewing legislation, strengthening oversight, and ensuring Energy Safe Victoria continues to have the tools and resources it needs for proactive regulation of a changing energy system.

This Roadmap follows extensive industry consultation and analysis of Victoria's energy safety framework through the Energy Safety Review, which is part of a $7 million investment to further protect Victorian workers and consumers through the energy transition.

Implementation of the Roadmap will begin in early 2026. The Government will work closely with industry, unions and regulators to progress these actions.
