New Hospital Planned for Melbourne Biomedical Hub

VIC Premier

The Allan Labor Government has given the greenlight for a brand new hospital to be built in Victoria's world-leading biomedical precinct.

Fast-tracked through the Labor Government's Development Facilitation Program, the new private hospital will add to the Parkville precinct which is home to some of the biggest global names in the biomedical and research sectors..

The hospital will be built on the corner of Flemington Road and Errol Street, across from the Royal Women's Hospital and close to the Royal Children's Hospital, the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre, the Australian Medical Association and the Bio21 Institute.

The new hospital is expected to include pathology, medical imaging, seven operating rooms, 10 ICU rooms, and provide hospital beds for more than 200 Victorians who need medical care.

The Government consulted with the community and council throughout the application process and amendments were made including changes to the setbacks and building form to increase natural light to nearby properties. Changes were also made to create better site access for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.

The Development Facilitation Program streamlines the planning process for projects that boost investment, keep people in jobs and create more homes and facilities for Victorians.

When the Metro Tunnel opens a year ahead of schedule later this year, the Parkville medical precinct will be serviced by a train line for the first time, delivering faster travel to world-class care for patients, doctors and nurses.

As stated by Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny

"We've given the greenlight for a new hospital to be built in Victoria's world-leading biomedical precinct."

"The new hospital is consistent with the plans for the Parkville precinct, an established research cluster on the doorstep of the CBD for education, health, professional and technical industries."
