Edward River Council will introduce a new landfill voucher system from 1 September 2026, replacing the current Free Waste Weekend program with a safer and more flexible approach for residents.
Deputy Mayor Kellie Crossley said the new system has been developed to address safety concerns associated with large numbers of people and vehicles attending the landfill over a short period of time.
"Free Waste Weekend has been a popular initiative for many years, but it can result in significant congestion at the landfill, creating safety risks for both visitors and Council staff," Cr Crossley said.
"The safety of our community and our staff must always come first. By spreading visits across the year rather than concentrating them into a specific weekend, we can create a safer environment for everyone using the site."
Under the new system, eligible residents will receive landfill vouchers that can be used on any day the Deniliquin Landfill is open, providing far greater flexibility than the previous arrangement.
Each eligible household will receive a voucher valued at $52, which can be used over multiple visits throughout the year. Residents are not required to use the full amount in a single transaction, with the remaining balance automatically updated after each use.
Council Chief Executive Officer Jack Bond said the change would make it easier for residents to dispose of household waste at a time that suited them.
"Instead of waiting for a designated weekend, residents will have the flexibility to use their voucher when it is convenient for them," Mr Bond said.
"Importantly, the voucher doesn't have to be used all at once. Residents can spread their visits across the year and keep track of their remaining balance through the online system, making it a much more convenient option for households."
Residents will be able to apply online or seek assistance through Council's Customer Service team and the Edward River Library; and are encouraged to attend one of the information sessions if they would like help with the application process or have questions about the new system.
Helpful information and frequently asked questions have been published on Council's website so that residents can start familiarising themselves with the changes ahead of the rollout.
The voucher system will be available to residents living within the Edward River Council area, including both town and rural residents. Renters will also be eligible, subject to proof of residency.
To support the rollout, Council will host a series of information sessions at the Edward River Library:

• Thursday 3 September 2026 | 8.30am to 12.30pm
• Tuesday 8 September 2026 | 8.30am to 10.30am and 4.30pm to 6.00pm
