New Local Primary School Built By Locals

Local businesses and workers are helping to build a new, state-of the-art primary school which will open its doors to 500 students from next year.

Minister for Industry and Employment Ben Carroll today joined Member for Albert Park Martin Foley to meet workers involved in building the new South Melbourne Park Primary School.

The Andrews Labor Government’s Local Jobs First policy has been applied to the project – creating opportunities for local businesses like Exar Pty Ltd and Advanced Lifestyle Solutions Pty Ltd.

The project is supporting 44 local jobs, including providing opportunities for four apprentices and cadets to gain valuable on-the-job skills in areas such as electrical, carpentry and design engineering.

This is one of more than 600 Local Jobs First projects that commenced in 2017-18 – creating thousands of new jobs, including hundreds for apprentices and trainees.

To put local businesses and workers first – the Labor Government put the Local Jobs First policy into law – meaning any future government will need to put Victorians first.

The law also creates the Local Jobs First Commissioner – who will advocate for businesses and workers, so they get a greater share of government projects. The Commissioner will also oversee compliance of local content and workforce commitments.

The Victorian Government is the largest procurer of goods, services and construction works in the state, and will continue to leverage its purchasing power to help develop local industries, create jobs and boost economic activity across Victoria.

As stated by Minister for Industry and Employment Ben Carroll

"When we build the infrastructure Victorians need – we’re creating local jobs and opportunities for businesses, suppliers and workers.

"Local businesses and workers have helped to build this vital new primary school which will welcome hundreds of students early next year."

As noted by Member for Albert Park Martin Foley

"The new South Melbourne Park Primary School will be an important part of this community and will give local families and students access to great local facilities and classrooms."
