Work to revitalise the popular Fisherman's Lookout, at The Pass, in the Cape Byron State Conservation Area will begin this week ensuring locals and visitors can continue to safely enjoy the beautiful views across Clarks and Wategos beaches.
"The lookout is one of the most popular destinations on the reserve area," said National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Area Manager, Sue Walker.
"Since its opening 21 years ago, it's been a favourite spot for locals and visitors to the region to enjoy spectacular views of the Bay, Julian Rocks and the hinterland.
"As the current platform is reaching towards its use by, these works are vital to maintain a safe location for people to view the surf, the marine life and the amazing scenery around the bay."
NPWS is advising visitors to the area that the viewing platform will be closed during construction, as well as the beach access track at the eastern end of Wategos Beach.
"Along with the viewing platform, the beach access track will also be replaced to ensure beach-goers can more safely navigate their way to the sand without disturbing wildlife in the surrounding habitat," said Ms Walker.
"All other access tracks to the beach will remain open during this time, and there are plenty of other lookouts along the Cape Byron Walking Track for picture perfect views out to the ocean."
Funding for the two rebuilds is being provided by the Cape Byron Trust and NPWS, and works are expected to be completed by the end of September.
"The support of the Cape Byron Trust is appreciated and we thank the local community and visitors for their understanding during these closures," said Ms Walker.
"We are really looking forward to the re-opening of the platform and the beach access track so everyone can once again enjoy this picturesque location."
