New Mayor and Deputy Mayor for Murrindindi Shire

At the Unscheduled Meeting of Council on 17 November 2021, Cr Sue Carpenter was elected as Mayor and Cr Damien Gallagher was elected as Deputy Mayor for a period of 12 months.

Cr Sue Carpenter was pleased to be elected as Mayor, after serving as Deputy Mayor for the 2020-2021 term.

'I will do my best to serve the communities across our Shire. I will be available to listen to the needs of the community and advocate where I can. I hope to be able to meet with community groups and participate in community planning and consultation activities face-to-face', said Cr Carpenter.

'I consider myself to be fortunate to be working with a group of Councillors who give their best for the betterment of our Shire. We are a cohesive group who have demonstrated that we can work well together and I look forward to another constructive and productive year.

'I would like to thank my fellow Councillors for having had the faith to select me as their Mayor', Cr Carpenter added.

Cr Sandice McAulay reflected on her term as Mayor during the last 12 months and thanked her fellow Councillors, Council officers and the Murrindindi Shire community.

'This time last year I was so very honoured to be entrusted by my fellow peers with the position of Mayor for 2020-2021. I have endeavored to live up to this trust during this important first year of the new Council', Cr McAulay said.

'Thank you to all of my fellow Councillors who have provided support and inspiration throughout my term as Mayor. Thank you to Council officers who have also made my year that much easier. And finally, thank you to the community - you are why we are here in the first place. And of course a special thank you to those volunteers in our community who make Murrindindi Shire such a special place', added Cr McAulay.

At the 17 November Meeting, Council also resolved to establish the following portfolios and Councillor appointments:

  • Corporate and Governance – Cr John Walsh
  • Resource Recovery and Environment – Cr Karine Haslam
  • Community Assets and Emergencies – Cr Sandice McAulay
  • Planning and Compliance – Cr Eric Lording
  • Community Engagement and Wellbeing – Cr Damien Gallagher
  • Tourism, Events and Business Support – Cr Ilona Gerencser

Council has historically had a Portfolio system in place to enable Councillors to focus and provide input on specific areas of Council.
