New Mental Health Commissioner

The Marshall Liberal Government has today appointed John Mannion as one of the Mental Health Commissioners for South Australia.

Minister for Health and Wellbeing Stephen Wade said Mr Mannion will replace Professor Sharon Lawn, who resigned in April 2021 due to personal commitments.

"In seeking a replacement Mental Health Commissioner, we sought a leader with a sound knowledge of South Australia's mental health system, expertise in community mental health services, and proven experience in community resilience strategies to improve mental health and wellbeing," Minister Wade said.

"Mr Mannion is a leading mental health clinician, with over 30 years' experience working in mental health and social care services across government and not-for-profit sectors.

"COVID-19 has resulted in higher levels of mental distress in young people with increasing referrals to mental health services.

"Mr Mannion brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role at this important time, and we are looking forward to working with him."

Mr Mannion is a registered Mental Health Nurse, having worked in acute and community mental health services in the United Kingdom and Australia, including the Executive Director role of Mental Health Services within the Southern Adelaide Local Health Network.

Mr Mannion led the establishment of Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation in 2018 and has led multiple community-based strategies and programs.

He joins the current Commissioners Heather Nowak and David Kelly to continue to lead the implementation of the state's Mental Health Strategic Plan and contribute to the Mental Health Services Plan.

The three Mental Health Commissioners have an important role in reducing these impacts by continuing to work with communities with a strong focus on early intervention and prevention as well as building resilience and mental wellbeing.

Mr Mannion will commence as part-time Mental Health Commissioner on 1 July 2021 and will continue in his leadership role as the Executive Director of Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation.

The appointment of Mr John Mannion has been published in the Government Gazette today.
