New Mural for Bayside

Three large shipping containers on the foreshore at Brighton Le Sands have been decorated with a striking mural to complement the natural beauty of the area.

Council placed the three shipping containers at the site where several large trees were recently cut down by chainsaws to deter future vandalism.

News trees have also been planted and containers will stay in place to give them time to grow and become established.

Council engaged renowned visual artist, David Cragg, from the Illawarra District to design and paint a mural that would enhance, and complement, the natural scenery of Botany Bay.

David started the mural on Tuesday 31 August.

This new mural features a yellow tail black cockatoo sitting amongst the blooms of a native Banksia tree and feasting on the pods.

Small flocks of the yellow tail black cockatoo, which are becoming increasingly rare, can sometimes be seen amongst the Banksia and Casuarina trees in Brighton and Botany.

The vandals didn't just destroy several beautiful trees, they also destroyed an important food source for our native animals.

If you see a yellow tail black cockatoo in the area please take a photo and enter it into Council's photography competition.
