The Victorian Greens are demanding the new Premier give IBAC the full suite of powers it has repeatedly called for, not just limited follow-the-dollar powers.
The Greens say that follow-the-dollar powers will be almost meaningless without also expanding what IBAC can investigate and without letting it hold public hearings.
IBAC needs the full suite of powers and resources it needs if it's going to be able to go after politicians and officials for all forms of corruption.
Labor has repeatedly voted against strong powers for IBAC, voting against Greens legislation as recently as March this year.
The Greens say if new Premier Ben Carroll has only introduced follow-the-money powers without expanding the definition of corrupt conduct to allow it to look into all forms of corruption - not just the incredible high bar of indictable offences - Labor will just be managing the headlines but not fixing the problem.
IBAC exists to investigate corruption and misconduct in government. The Greens say giving it the full powers it needs is essential to holding Ministers and government officials accountable.
As stated by the Leader of the Victorian Greens, Ellen Sandell:
"The new Premier can't rewrite Labor's decade-long legacy of corruption scandals with half-measures.
"Currently the new Premier's promises are all about managing the headlines but not actually fixing the problem. IBAC needs the full suite of powers to go after politicians and officials for all forms of corruption - not just the hugely high bar that it's currently set at."
"Victorians deserve to know what Ministers and government officials knew, when they knew it, and whether they acted properly. That only happens if IBAC gets the full suite of powers, rather than the limited powers Ben Carroll has promised so far".
