Empty drink? Share your 10c!
The problem is a familiar one. You're out and about, and you buy a drink to have on the go. But when you finish it, there isn't always a recycling bin nearby.
To make it easier to recycle drink containers in public, we're trying something different. We've teamed up with CDS Vic to install container recycling baskets on 86 of our public garbage bins. This means that people can recycle their containers on the go, without having to find a recycling bin.
The result will be that:
- More containers will be recycled, not sent to landfill.
- People looking for containers won't have to rummage through bins to find them.
- Everyone benefits from cleaner streets and a greener City.
How it works
- Finished your drink? Pop your eligible drink container into one of our new baskets. They're attached to more than 80 of our public place garbage bins. It's a small act that adds up, helping both the planet and people in our community.
- Looking to earn? Anyone can collect the containers and return them at a CDS return point for a 10c refund per item.
What containers can go in the baskets?
Only CDS eligible containers can go in the baskets. This includes bottles and cans, and some small liquid paperboard containers, e.g. juice boxes. Eligible items will have a 10c label on them. These are the containers most regularly consumed on the go that end up as litter. Some drink containers are not eligible, including plain milk containers, wine and spirit bottles.
Where will the baskets be?
We've installed the baskets on 86 garbage bins in high-traffic areas, including bus stop routes and major intersections:

Working together to increase recycling and reduce litter
Since the Container Deposit Scheme was launched in November 2023, residents and visitors have exchanged over 12 million containers at return points across Port Phillip. A year after its launch, the presence of drink containers in public place garbage bins in our city had halved. This means fewer containers going to landfill. With these new baskets, we hope to reduce waste even further - and make recycling even more accessible. Together, we can create a cleaner, greener Port Phillip - one container at a time.
