The next major milestone has been reached in the delivery of a new, fit-for-purpose Renal Health Unit at the Kings Meadows Community Health Centre.
Shape Australia Pty Ltd has been awarded the construction contract and main works will begin in early January 2026.
Site preparations are currently underway, with on-site activity including the installation of a temporary building and some tree works to provide access for larger machinery needed for demolition and construction.
Once the main works site is established in January 2026, demolition of the existing Joan Marshall building will begin, which is expected to take approximately four weeks.
Following the removal of the existing building, the new, larger Renal Health Unit will be built on the same site. The new facility will expand the number of treatment bays to 18 to deliver renal dialysis services.
The Australian Government has provided $10 million towards the Kings Meadows Community Health Centre redevelopment through the Community Health and Hospitals Program.
The new Renal Health Unit will continue to honour the legacy of Joan Marshall, with the building name being retained as part of the redevelopment.
The redevelopment has been shaped by consultation with health service providers, renal consumers, and community representatives, ensuring the new facility reflects clinical requirements and supports an improved patient experience.
Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing Bridget Archer said the new renal unit will deliver modern health services for Northern Tasmania that will help to meet the future needs of the community.
"This project will transform the site to provide contemporary clinical spaces, improved patient access and safer links between car parking and the main Community Health Centre," Minister Archer said.
"The development is an important part of the Tasmanian Government's long-term plan to deliver health infrastructure that ensures Tasmanians can access the right care, in the right place, at the right time".
Federal Member for Bass, Jess Teesdale, said this new Renal Health Unit at Kings Meadows is a game-changer for Northern Tasmania, giving patients access to life-saving dialysis closer to home in a modern, purpose-built facility.
"The Australian Government's $10 million investment shows what can be achieved when governments, health providers, and the community work together."
The Kings Meadows Community Health Centre will remain open during construction and renal dialysis and most allied health services will continue to be delivered from the Health Centre.
Construction is expected to be completed by late 2026, with renal dialysis services to commence from the new facility shortly thereafter.
The Tasmanian Government will continue to keep stakeholders and the community informed as the redevelopment progresses.
