New report on cultural funding by government

The Cultural Funding by Government 2017-18 survey shows total expenditure has increased by 13% since 2016-17.

Each financial year all levels of government report on investment in the arts and heritage in Australia.

The report is published annually by the Meeting of Cultural Ministers (MCM) Statistics Working Group, and is prepared by a consultant from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The latest report is now available and estimates that in 2017-18, total cultural expenditure was $6,863 million, which is an increase of 13%, or $764.5 million compared with 2016-17.

The Australian Government's expenditure in 2017-18 was $2,674.9 million, an increase of 12% from 2016-17.

Commonwealth expenditure represented 39% of all government cultural expenditure, which is consistent with the previous year.
