New scheme to promote professional development for building surveyors

Elise Archer,Minister for Workplace Safety and Consumer Affairs

A scheme to promote and improve professional standards among building surveyors has commenced in Tasmania from today.

The Australian Institute of Building Surveyors Professional Standards Scheme has been introduced following a call by the Building Ministers' Forum in December 2019 for industry associations to develop professional standards schemes as a matter of priority.

The Scheme has been approved by the Professional Standards Councils and has been gazetted to allow its operation in Tasmania.

It is expected that the Scheme will help building surveyors better understand their legislative obligations and assist the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors to monitor and enforce the professional standards of its members.

Promoting and improving professional standards will in turn help protect consumers.

The Scheme will also provide benefits in relation to professional indemnity insurance by enabling an insurance cap to be imposed
