New sign encourages active travel

A new wayfinding map sign with a strong focus on recreational and leisure facilities has been installed at the Kangaroo Flat Train Station to promote active travel and help pedestrians and visitors arriving by coach or train to navigate their way around Kangaroo Flat.

The new sign has been funded by the Healthy Heart of Victoria initiative and is a partnership with Healthy Greater Bendigo and the City of Greater Bendigo.

Healthy Greater Bendigo Executive Officer Amy Brown said the new sign features a map to direct visitors to key local landmarks such as Gurri Wanyarra Wellbeing Centre, Gateway Park, Dower Park, local shopping centres and the new Kangaroo Flat Library to name just a few. It also directs people to local sporting grounds, recreation and leisure facilities and walking trails.

"The new sign will help to promote and activate key routes between the Kangaroo Flat township and the station and reduce the demand for car parking at the station," Ms Brown said.

"By increasing pedestrian movements between the station and the township the safety of the area will be increased and residents will not only be encouraged to walk for transport but will also enjoy the health benefits of doing so.

"We are hoping to increase the utilisation of the Kangaroo Flat Station, both among residents from other parts of Greater Bendigo, particularly those along the Bendigo Metro Rail corridors, as well as people from outside Greater Bendigo, who may be visiting key destinations in the area like the Gurri Wanyarra Wellbeing Centre. The installation of the new sign is just one way to help encourage this

"The sign is similar to the wayfinding map signs that have been in place in the Bendigo City Centre for many years now.

"It will help people to know where they are, how they can get to where they want to go and how long will it take to do so."

"This is one way that Healthy Greater Bendigo are encouraging people to be more active more often.

"International research shows that walkable cities promote not only the communities health, but the economy as well. Having this sign in place makes the area more walkable for visitors and community members alike."

The new sign has been installed in a prominent location at the Kangaroo Flat Train Station.
