New suburban infrastructure upgrades start across Canberra

Work has started on Canberra's biggest ever suburban infrastructure program, with upgrades to local shops in Kaleen first to get underway.

"We promised new and upgraded local infrastructure to support jobs, local businesses and communities," said Minister for Transport and City Services Chris Steel.

"Work is now underway to build better suburban infrastructure for Canberra, with the first of our local shops upgrades starting in Kaleen now underway - and Duffy and Campbell soon to follow.

"We know Canberrans love their local shops, particularly in recent years as we've all spent more time closer to home. These upgrades will create vibrant shopping centres and main streets that are better places for people."

This investment will deliver the design and construction of 15 shop upgrades across Canberra - including the local shops at:

  • Kaleen
  • Duffy
  • Campbell
  • Narrabundah
  • Evatt
  • Macquarie
  • Evatt
  • Monash

And the commercial precincts and group centres of:

  • Weston (Brierly Street)
  • Holt (Kippax)
  • Lanyon
  • Calwell
  • Dickson (Woolley Street)
  • Braddon (Lonsdale Street)
  • Pialligo

Canberrans will also be invited to provide feedback on the design of new and upgraded playgrounds, with community consultation starting soon in the following suburbs:

  • Aranda
  • Ngunnawal
  • Chisholm
  • Gordon

Consultation at Lyons and Kaleen will follow later in the term.

Upgrades to the Tuggeranong foreshore get underway next month, with Canberrans encouraged to share ideas on how the Tuggeranong Foreshore's amenity and facilities can be upgraded or improved. Work is already underway on a range of improvements around Yerrabi Pond in Gungahlin following community consultation, with further upgrades being designed, including new and upgraded toilets, lighting and car parking.

The ACT Government will also undertake consultation soon on a new community recreation park in Casey, to support the health and recreation needs of the community.

Canberra's dogs (and their owners) will also benefit from this record program of suburban infrastructure. We are delivering two new dog parks on the north and south sides of the city – with design and location consultation planned for the middle of the year at Franklin and Lanyon.

"The ACT Government is delivering better local infrastructure that's built for Canberra.

"Our investment will ensure popular public amenities including playgrounds, dog parks, local shops and main streets are quality spaces for Canberrans to use," said Minister Steel.
