New Tech-led Research Of Maugean Skate

Tasmanian Government

The Tasmanian Government is investing in the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) to deliver a new tech-led research and conservation program for the Maugean skate.

The Maugean Skate Conservation Action Program will use acoustic technology, involving the attachment of very small devices to skates. The devices emit signals that allow researchers to track skate using dedicated receivers installed around Macquarie Harbour.

Minister for the Environment, Madeleine Ogilvie, said that the program will seek to develop insights to better inform the science-based approach to conservation strategies.

"We're looking to understand the unique behaviour and habitat requirements of the Maugean skate. Specifically, how this cryptic species responds to the range of environmental conditions they experience in the harbour," Minister Ogilvie said.

"Outside of the harbour, we want to ensure that as many as possible captive skate are 'harbour-ready' and can be successfully relocated into their natural environment.

"In many ways, the new program follows in the footsteps of the Orange-bellied Parrot Migration Tracking Project, which uses similar technology, and is delivering remarkable early insights into the species."

Through the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, we are investing in Tasmania's natural environment and unique species.

Funded through the Threatened Species Fund, the 12-month Maugean Skate Conservation Action Program will be completed by 30 April 2026.
