New Tool Launched for Calicivirus Release Planning

Tasmanian Government

Community members across the state will now be able to actively report rabbit infestations or register their interest for calicivirus release on their property with the introduction of a new online reporting tool.

Minister for Primary Industries and Water, Gavin Pearce, said the information collected will help Biosecurity Tasmania plan an effective release of calicivirus when environmental conditions allow.

"The form will ask for the number of rabbits seen, property details, and any control techniques landholders are already using to help control rabbit numbers," Minister Pearce said.

"It's important that we remember there's no silver bullet to managing our rabbit populations.

"There's a range of ways to go about getting rid of rabbits on your property, such as warren ripping, shooting, exclusion fencing, and habitat removal.

"Calicivirus is a seasonal tool and can only be deployed when conditions allow.

"As we approach that time of year, data collected through the online reporting tool will be essential to planning the effective release of Calicivirus."
