New Upgrades Put Wonthaggi Streets Ahead

VIC Premier

The Allan Labor Government has delivered a safer and more accessible space for visitors, locals and businesses in Wonthaggi, thanks to upgrades that strengthen its reputation as the vibrant regional centre of the Bass Coast.

Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale today represented Minister for Regional Development Jaclyn Symes to celebrate the completion of streetscapes upgrades in Wonthaggi's town centre, made possible by a $2 million Labor Government investment.

The upgrades have improved the Biggs Drive and Murray Street intersection, making it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to safely cross the road, while the redevelopment of Apex Park has delivered a new playground and accessible public toilets.

Other enhancements include new street furniture, colourful modular planter boxes along McBride Avenue, artworks, and priority crossings throughout the main activity area for those on foot and bikes, allowing locals and visitors to easily access all the best that Wonthaggi has to offer.

Thirteen Crepe Myrtle Trees have also been planted along Graham Street, as part of Bass Coast Shire Council's Alternative Freight Route Strategy, which aims to redirect freight traffic and heavy vehicles away from the town centre and establish alternative routes to the Bass Highway.

The upgrades were supported by a $1million investment from Bass Coast Shire Council.

The upgrades are yet another example of our record investment of more than $47 billion in rural and regional Victoria in just over a decade, helping to make regional cities and towns even better places to live, work, visit and invest. For more information, visit rdv.vic.gov.au.
