New water main to secure water supply to Bohle Plains underway

Townsville City Council has engaged BMD Constructions to install a new underground water main adjacent to the Ring Road to enhance water security for the growing Bohle Plains community.

Work on the $1 million project is underway and will include the installation of approximately 1km of pipeline beside the existing water main.

Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the new water main was about building capacity and future-proofing the region.

"Council has invested heavily in our underground infrastructure, which will not only ensure Townsville has a good water supply for decades to come but support our city as it grows in terms of development," Cr Hill said.

"This new water main is a key element of Council's commitment to invest in infrastructure projects right across Townsville, from the city to the suburbs."

Townsville Water and Waste Committee chairperson Russ Cook said the new water main would ensure the Bohle Plains community had reliable water supply for decades to come.

"Council is committed to ensuring our city has a safe, reliable, secure and healthy water supply and as our city grows, we must continue to invest in essential infrastructure," Cr Cook said.

"This second pipeline will ensure the surrounding area has a good, reliable source of water for decades to come.

"In last year's budget, Council committed $23.5 million to upgrade water mains right across Townsville to enhance the water supply for residents and ensure our infrastructure will last into the future.

"Council's 2021/22 Budget continued our strong focus on the city's water security, with a $177 million investment in water infrastructure and services."

The water main installation will take place underneath the existing footpath adjacent to the Ring Road - between Dalrymple Road and Poinsettia St, Bohle Plains.

"Council has contracted BMD to undertake this water main installation costing just over $1 million and will support 12 jobs," Cr Cook said.

"There will be a temporary pedestrian detour in place while contractors conduct the works to install the water main beneath the existing footpath.

"We thank the community for their patience while these works are being completed."
