Newcastle Man Charged: Property, Traffic, Assault

A man will face court today charged with 14 property, traffic and assault police offences alleged to have occurred in Newcastle.

About 1.20am today (Tuesday 1 July 2025), police were called to a home on Harle Street, Hamilton South, following reports of a break and enter.

At the scene, police were told a man had entered the home before allegedly stealing a laptop computer.

Following inquiries, police attended a licenced premises on Railway Street, Merewether, a short time later.

Police spoke with a man inside the premises and during a search of the man's bag, he allegedly became aggressive and was required to be handcuffed.

A search of the man's bag allegedly revealed a laptop suspected of being stolen from the home in Hamilton South.

The 27-year-old man was arrested, with subsequent inquiries revealing links to other break and enter offences alleged to have occurred in Merewether, Hamilton, and Hamilton South.

As officers walked the man to the police vehicle, he allegedly resisted and kicked at police before biting the hand of an officer, drawing blood.

OC spray was deployed, and police were able to secure the man inside the police vehicle before taking him to Newcastle Police Station.

There he was charged with 14 offences,

  • Aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence (two counts)
  • Aggravated commit serious indictable offence in dwelling
  • Commit s114 offence, having previous conviction (two counts)
  • Hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty
  • Assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm
  • Give false name/address to constable
  • Goods in personal custody suspected being stolen
  • Dishonestly obtain property by deception
  • Larceny (three counts), and
  • Enter building/land with intent to commit indictable offence.

He was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Local Court today (Tuesday 1 July 2025).
