Next step for Derwent River Ferry Service

Forums being held in Hobart today represent the next step in the Hodgman Liberal Government’s commitment to establishing a new Derwent River ferry service.

The forums are an opportunity for relevant stakeholders within the industry and the community to provide direct feedback to Metro Tasmania on how the service can best operate and meet the needs of the community.

The Hodgman Government is committed to helping ease Hobart’s traffic congestion, which is especially pertinent in my electorate of Denison.

That’s why we went to the election with a range of measures to address traffic congestion in Hobart, including our $2 million commitment for a commuter ferry service to operate between Bellerive and Sullivans Cove.

We want people to spend less time in traffic and more time on things they want to be doing, and this service could potentially take thousands of vehicles off roads in and around the city.

It adds to other measures we have taken to reduce congestion, such as taking over Davey and Macquarie Streets and constructing a fifth lane on the Southern Outlet, that will collectively ensure Hobart has a number of transport options that link the city centre with its southern, eastern and northern suburbs.

We will continue to progress this initiative as we deliver on our long term plan to improve the lives of every Tasmanian.
