Next steps for Marine Scalefish Fishery reform

More than 40 commercial fishers have already applied to surrender their licence under the Marshall Liberal Government's historic $24.5 million reform of the South Australian Marine Scalefish Fishery, as more information is released today regarding future fishery changes.

In the latest information pack (Stage 2 information) to fishers, the State Government has released the proposed allocation formula of individual transferable quota (ITQ) for the four priority species – King George whiting, snapper, southern garfish and southern calamari – owner-operator arrangements, red-tape reduction process and projected fees going forward.

Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development David Basham said the latest information will be important for fishers to consider.

"This new information will enable fishers to sit down with their families to discuss whether they should stay in the fishery and invest into the future, or whether now is the time to exit the industry and participate in the voluntary licence surrender program," said Minister Basham.

"Whilst fishers have been keen to receive this information, it will be a difficult time for many. To further assist fishers and their families during this reform period we've ensured support services are available to assist industry members, including our Family and Business Support program (FaBS) and the Rural Financial Counselling Service.

"Since launching the voluntary surrender process in May, 44 fishers have decided to leave the industry - 40 line licences and four net licences. This number is well above our expectations at this stage of the reform process.

"Our historic $24.5 million Marine Scalefish Fishery reform package is aimed at improving the long-term sustainability of fish stocks in South Australia and increasing the profitability of seafood businesses.

"We have budgeted for the voluntary surrender of 150 licences. This is a once-off opportunity with applications closing on 13 November 2020, unless fully subscribed beforehand. If less than 150 licences are surrendered, the quota will be allocated amongst the remaining fishers.

"Fishers are able to provide feedback on the latest package of information by Friday 18 September 2020 via www.pir.sa.gov.au/fishingreform.

"All responses received will inform the final management arrangements of the reformed fishery.

"The Department of Primary Industries and Regions will also be undertaking regional visits in late August to talk with fishers directly about reform."
