The offshore wind industry is another step closer with the Australian Government announcing the preliminary feasibility licence decision for Western Australia.
This will be a huge boost for local development, new jobs and new investment.
The decision follows:
- community consultation
- face-to-face open house sessions
- online information sessions
- an assessment process by the Offshore Infrastructure Registrar.
In June 2025 the government announced 2 short listed projects for the Indian Ocean off the Bunbury region, Western Australia offshore wind area.
These projects have resolved their overlap. This means the government has offered preliminary feasibility licences to:
- Westward Wind Pty Ltd for the Westward Wind Project
- Bunbury Offshore Wind Pty Ltd for the Bunbury Offshore Wind Project in the southern area (Bunbury OWP South)
These announcements are in addition to the preliminary decision to offer a feasibility licence to Bunbury Offshore Wind Pty Ltd for the Bunbury Offshore Wind Project in the northern area.
Together these 3 projects will:
- cover an area the size of approximately 730 km2
- generate 4 Gigawatts of power.
The government has not issued any feasibility licences yet.
The Minister for Climate Change and Energy's final decision on applications depends on the outcome of consultation with First Nations groups under the Native Title Act 1993.
