Ngaoara Fellowship Winner Announced

Printmaker and painter, Aaron William Kennedy has been named the winner of the Ngaoara (Black Cockatoo) Fellowship to display his artwork at the Shoalhaven Regional Gallery in 2026.

The Jerrinja and Djirringanj, Yuin man won the coveted solo exhibition with his project, Creatures of the South Coast. Mr Kennedy's work will feature a series of lino prints representing significant local animals, created On Country alongside South Coast Elders.

Born and raised in Sydney, Mr Kennedy was selected for the Fellowship following a competitive application process seeking emerging First Nations artists to exhibit their work at the gallery in Nowra.

"I'd like to congratulate Mr Kennedy on being awarded this fantastic opportunity to exhibit his work and receive a mentorship from recognised First Nations artist, Gorawarl Jerrawongarla woman, Aunty Julie Freeman," said Mayor Patricia White.

"We're delighted to offer this fellowship for a second consecutive year. It provides an invaluable opportunity for creative individuals to challenge themselves, showcase their talents, and celebrate their strong connection to our region," Cr White said.

"I look forward to viewing Mr Kennedy's artwork when it's displayed at the gallery in 2026," she said.

Mr Kennedy is currently completing his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) with Honours from UNSW Art and Design, majoring in Printmaking and Painting. His passion for the arts was inspired by a school-based immersion program in Yulara, Northern Territory which exposed him to Central Desert art.

He said he was excited to be selected for the Ngaoara Fellowship as it will give him an opportunity to continue learning from his Yuin Elders on the South Coast.
