Nobel Peace Prize Awarded To Venezuela's María Corina Machado

Human Rights Watch

The Norwegian Nobel Committee on October 10, 2025, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2025 to the Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. The Committee cited "her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy."

The following quote can be attributed to Federico Borello, Interim Executive Director at Human Rights Watch:

"The Nobel Peace Prize awarded to María Corina Machado should help reinvigorate international efforts to promote a peaceful transition to democracy in Venezuela. People in Venezuela have long suffered at the hands of a brutal government responsible for systematic human rights violations and a devastating humanitarian crisis. Foreign governments should support Venezuelans as they continue to struggle for a rights-respecting democracy."

Human Rights Watch recently addressed the human rights situation in Venezuela in "Venezuela: Political Prisoners Cut Off from the World," and "Punished for Seeking Change."
