Georges River Council is calling on the community to submit nominations for the 2026 Historical Markers Program!
The Program began in 2018 and celebrates the history and identity of the Georges River area. Each year, up to five new markers are installed based on community nominations. These markers recognise people and places of historical and cultural importance to the community. Together, they create an open‑air archive for everyone to visit.
By nominating a marker, community members help preserve local history. They also honour diverse cultures and First Nations heritage. This recognition strengthens the connection between people and place.
Previous markers show the wide range of stories represented across the Georges River area. Examples include:

Joe Anderson (King Burraga), an Aboriginal activist who played a leading role in the civil rights movement at Salt Pan Creek.

Ruby Payne‑Scott, a renowned physicist and radar researcher who became Australia's first female radio astronomer.

Webb's Market Garden, the place now known as H.V. Evatt Park, which began as a citrus orchard in the 1920s and later became a Chinese market garden.
Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, "The Historical Markers Program is an important way for us to recognise the people and places that have shaped Georges River.
"I encourage our community to think about the stories that matter to them and put forward a nomination.
"By doing this, we help protect our shared history and pass it on to future generations."
Nominations close on Monday 18 May 2026 and can be made via Council's Historical Markers Annual Program Your Say webpage.
