As 2025 draws to a close, it's the perfect time to reflect on the year that was — the moments, people, and events that brought us together and made Horsham Rural City stronger.
Horsham Rural City Council is inviting the community to take part in this year's Australia Day Awards by nominating a standout citizen, young achiever, or event that deserves recognition.
"There is so much to celebrate in our community," said Acting Mayor Cr Brian Klowss.
"When you stop and look back on everything that's happened this year — the events, fundraisers, grassroots projects, and the quiet achievers — it fills me with pride to be part of this place. It's that incredible sense of community that defines who we are."
The Australia Day Awards honour individuals and groups who have made a meaningful and lasting impact on the Horsham region. Nominations are now open in the following categories:
- Citizen of the Year (25 years or older as of 26 January 2026)
- Young Citizen of the Year (Under 25 years as of 26 January 2026)
- Community Event of the Year
Nominees must be Australian citizens, and must either live, work or volunteer in the Horsham municipality.
Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year awards are for individuals who have made a noteworthy contribution during the current year and/or given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years.
The Community Event of the Year award will go to the organiser/group who has staged the most outstanding community event during the year.
"We all know someone who goes above and beyond — whether it's a volunteer, a mentor, or someone passionate about making a difference," said Cr Klowss. "Now's the time to shine a spotlight on them."
Nomination forms are available online or in hard copy at the Civic Centre. Submissions close Friday, 21 November.
Award recipients will be announced and celebrated at the Australia Day Celebration on Monday, 26 January 2026, at Sawyer Park, Horsham.
The free, family-friendly event provides an opportunity for all community members to come together, reflect on shared history, and celebrate the diversity that makes Horsham special.
It will feature a community breakfast, live music, engaging activities and a Welcome to Country, to honour and share local Aboriginal culture and stories.
