Newcastle Writersʼ Festival is back with a very special guest!

Cessnock City Council is thrilled to welcome the 2023 Newcastle Writers Festival back to Cessnock as the Festival teams up with Cessnock City Library and Performance Arts Culture Cessnock (PACC) to host a prestigious author event.

In 2023, more than 100 writers will feature in the Newcastle Writers Festival program, which was was launched online last Friday.

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Jay Suvaal said it is an amazing opportunity for Cessnock and looks forward to Council working again with the Newcastle Writers Festival.

"Newcastle Writers Festival is now one of Australia's largest regional literary festivals and 2023 marks its tenth anniversary. We are excited to be a part of this fantastic celebration of writers and welcome visitors to our local government area."

On Saturday 1 April, Newcastle Writers Festival will present The Lowdown on Longevity: Norman Swan in Conversation at the Performance Arts Culture Cessnock (PACC). The event will be hosted by ABC podcast host and producer Matt Bevan.

In the pursuit of health, happiness and youth, does anyone hold the secret? The community is invited to join Norman Swan in conversation about the ultimate dream – to stay as young as possible, for as long as possible. Heʼll explore the science, myths and mistruths that surround ageing.

Trained in paediatrics, Dr Swan was one of the first medically qualified journalists in Australia, with a broadcast career spanning more than 30 years. He currently hosts Radio National's The Health Report and co-hosts Coronacast. He also reports on 7.30 and is a guest reporter on Four Corners; appears on The Drum and is an occasional host of Radio National Breakfast.

In addition to being an active journalist and health broadcaster, Dr Swan has a deep strategic knowledge of the Australian healthcare system and is committed to evidence-based approaches to help young people, which is why he sits on the board of the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth. He was also the co-founder of Tonic Media Network, a health channel that plays in GPs' waiting rooms.
