North East Rail Corridor proposals supported

Peter Gutwein,Treasurer

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government welcomes the Legislative Council's report which supports the development of the North East Rail corridor and recognises its economic benefits for the region.

The report recommends the establishment of a heritage rail line between Launceston and Lilydale, as well as supporting the development of a rail trail for cyclists and walkers from Lilydale to Scottsdale.

Today's report also backs the comprehensive and careful assessment the Government undertook of both the development of a heritage rail line and rail trail proposals.

It has been the Government's long held view that allowing proponents of the heritage rail line and rail trail concepts to undertake their respective developments in the rail corridor, will maximise the chances of both projects becoming viable tourist attractions to the benefit of everyone in the North East.

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government has been a long term supporter of the development of the North East Rail corridor and providing a boost for tourism and recreation in Tasmania's North East.
