North Ward sewage upgrade to support 35 jobs

Townsville City Council has approved an upgrade to a North Ward sewage pump station, with the project supporting up to 35 jobs.

Townsville Water and Waste Committee Chair Cr Russ Cook said the Council has awarded the tender to local company NQ Excavations Pty Ltd.

"The existing pump, its catchment gravity sewer and rising main have to be upgraded to cater for future growth in North Ward and Belgian Gardens," Cr Cook said.

"The current pump station on Howitt Street will be replaced with a new system on Isley Street in North Ward."

Local Councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the project is designed to reduce any overflows in the area and allow for future residential and commercial developments.

"North Ward and Belgian Gardens are two of the most popular suburbs in the city and we need to cater for future growth in the area," Cr Greaney said.

"The area is mostly residential but several commercial properties will also benefit from this project."

Work is expected to begin next month.
