In partnership with the North West Metro Region Emergency Management Collaboration, next month 14 north-west councils – representing more than 2.4 million residents – will come together for their annual large-scale Emergency Relief Centre exercise.
This year, Hume City Council is proud to host the event at the Mickleham North Community Centre. This vital training will test council's ability to respond swiftly and effectively in the face of crisis, providing immediate relief to emergency-impacted individuals.
By simulating a real-life disaster, the exercise strengthens regional preparedness, highlights areas for improvement, and ensures Emergency Relief Centres are ready to support residents when it matters most.
Emergency Relief Centres play a crucial role during emergencies – acting as a safe, accessible hub for immediate relief needs. Council staff volunteers are trained to provide immediate needs such as shelter, first aid, food, water and personal hygiene, personal support and linking affected individuals to support agencies such as the Red Cross and the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.
In Hume alone, the Emergency Management team responds to multiple events each year, including bushfires, flooding, storms, pandemics, and many more.
Councils will share expertise, resources, and best practice, building a unified and coordinated approach that ensures no community is left behind.
The collaboration underscores a clear commitment: protecting lives, supporting communities, and building resilience in the face of emergencies.
