North West transport system in chaos

Tasmanian Labor
  • Closure of Devonport Transit Centre being felt across the North West
  • Thousands of bus passengers left without facilities
  • Hobart and Launceston centres now in doubt
  • Tasmanian Labor is again calling on the Gutwein Government to reverse its decision to close down the Devonport Transit Centre.

The government must now also clarify its position on the future of the Launceston and Hobart Transit Centres.

Shadow Transport Minister Anita Dow said the closure of the Devonport hub coupled with a new bus schedule is causing havoc for people across the North West Coast.

"This represents the most appalling treatment of Redline Coaches and of the thousands of people who rely so heavily on their services," Ms Dow said.

"The government's decision was taken without consultation or regard for the wishes of Redline or the travelling public, and this cannot be repeated in the case of Launceston and Hobart."

"Long haul passengers are really feeling the impact of losing the transit centre in Devonport.

"With no more sales or counter staff, no facilities, shelter or amenities, it's proving very difficult for many of those travelling between major centres on the North West Coast and transiting for longer haul trips to Launceston and Hobart.

"Many of the people using this service regularly are elderly or disabled and there's also a high proportion of unaccompanied minors travelling on these coaches.

"Tasmanian Labor knows how important this facility and the customer service is to the North West community, which is why we are throwing our support behind Redline Coaches and its call to save the Devonport Transit Centre.

"Removal of the last remaining undercover customer service centre in the North West region has real-life implications for thousands of travellers and this decision must be reversed.

"And the government must give a commitment that other transit centres won't meet the same fate."

    Shadow Minister for Transport
