NSW Ambulance staff have been recognised for their service and dedication at a special awards ceremony in Tamworth.
Among the award recipients was Paramedic Jason Purkis who received a Commissioner's Certificate for his role in responding to the major incident at Walcha Showground on 15 November 2025.
Mr Purkis was one of several paramedics who demonstrated exceptional clinical expertise, providing rapid triage and immediate clinical intervention to multiple critically injured patients after a demolition derby vehicle lost control and collided with a spectator grandstand.
As part of a coordinated multi-agency response in heavy rainfall and fading light, paramedics including Mr Purkis treated and transported 13 patients to hospital. Their professionalism, dedication and composure in rapidly evolving and challenging conditions were recognised with a Commissioner's Certificate.
Members of the community were also recognised for their courage and selfless actions, including Coffs Harbour resident Brett Neal, who was awarded a Unit Citation for Courage after helping rescue a woman in her 70s when her vehicle left the roadway, plunged off a bridge and landed upside down in Coffs Creek.
With the vehicle partially submerged and the driver trapped inside, Mr Neal and another bystander immediately entered the water, freed the woman from the wreckage and commenced CPR. Thanks to their quick thinking and decisive actions, the woman made a full recovery and has remained in contact with her rescuers.
The Tamworth Awards and Recognition Ceremony was the third of four events held in 2026 to recognise NSW Ambulance staff and volunteers from across the state. A final ceremony will be held later this year in Sydney.
