NSW builders who flout Covid rules should be prosecuted

CFMEU NSW

Builders who breach Covid safety restrictions are putting at risk the entire industry and need to be prosecuted to send a clear message to others, warns the CFMEU NSW.

"There is no room for complacency in the construction industry in NSW during this pandemic", said Darren Greenfield, CFMEU NSW Construction Secretary.

"Workers, unions and builders have done everything necessary to get the industry back up and running again and we cannot have that put at risk because of complacent builders who flout the law and ignore Covid Safety Plans."

"Reports of workers from Sydney fined for being on a building site in Kiama should serve as a wake-up call to any builder who thinks they can get away with ignoring the rules or breaching the travel restrictions that are in place to stop the spread of the virus."

"The builder, Orwell Constructions, has publicly stated they have all safety protocols in place but in reality they are flouting the rules and putting at risk the ability of the entire industry to be continue to operate."

"Orwell is related to Ganellen which was fined $900,000 over the workplace fatality of Christopher Cassaniti in 2019."

"The union has also been informed workers on the Mickon Construction site in Lidcombe were not wearing masks and not social distancing."

"Most builders are doing the right thing but those that are not must be brought into line and prosecuted to send a warning to others who may think they can ignore the rules that allow construction to continue to operate safely and get back to 100 per cent capacity."
